Alphen Trail, Constantia Valley

We did this Constantia Valley, Green Belt walk in May 2011.

You can start the walk on either end but we parked our car on the bend of Alphen Drive that leads off Constantia Main Road.

Grading: Graded a 1A  by Cumhike, this is fairly accurate except for the part when the hike leader decided to take a detour straght up the mountain, taking the easy stroll from a 1A  to a heart stretching 4B!

As I said before this is an easy walk, no need for hiking boots just good walking shoes. The scenery is stunning, perfect for a morning walk with your dog.

The first forty minutes was on flat, shady terrain.

Starting off nice and early. 8am

So there we were, nicely strolling along until the hike leader realise ahhh no we can’t have people enjoying themselves too much let’s get their heart rates up so off the main path we turned straight up the pine needle floored embankment. Right up, don’t mind the effects of soil erosion. Next thing we knew we were here already. Take note that we started at the bottom of the valley.

After about two hours of walking we reached our lunch/tea resting spot and took in the panoramic views for the next half an hour or so.

So this I’d say is a fantastic walk for those who want an easy Sunday or are beginners and don’t want to be strained. As you can see the views are breathtaking as only Cape Town can be.

What you’ll need for this hike:

  • Takkies are fine
  • Day Backpack (20L)
  • Water
  • Lunch and snacks
  • Warm jersey
  • Windproof/waterproof jacket
  • Basic First aid
